Thanksgiving is approaching in just a couple of weeks. It is hands-down my favorite holiday by a long shot. Okay, I’ll be cynically honest. Thanksgiving is the only holiday that I actually like at all, and I LOVE IT.
I love the weather. I love the food. I love the family. I love, love, LOVE that it in no way requires presents.
It requires presence.
This year, at Thanksgiving, put down those awful Black Friday advertisements. Put down your stupid iPhone. Put down everything that you use to distract you from every single second of the day and do me a favor.
That’s it. Be present by being truly thankful for what you have, and also for what you don’t. Be grateful. Have grace. Seriously. Just sit there for a minute and let the feeling settle in. Push the minutiae of everyday life out of your head and for just a minute, feel truly thankful for your life. Remember that if everyone put their problems in a big pile you would take yours back in a hurry. Remember that millions of people are hungry, cold, and alone. Remember that. Remember that every day.
